The Mourning Dove derives its name from the repetitious cooing of a mournful intonation. Although the male collects the building material, only the female builds the nest. Both the male and female share the responsibility of hatching their eggs. In this bronze, the female is shown to be settling in on her newly built nest which houses her eggs. Her wings are flaired as she tries to become comfortable.
